Gene „Windy“ Winfield wurde 1927 in Springfield geboren und wuchs im kalifornischen Modesto auf. Bereits im Alter von 10 Jahren bastelte er sich in seiner Freizeit Flugzeuge, die er von Fotos ableitete. Mit 15 Jahren kaufte er sich sein erstes Auto. Er lackierte es sogleich in einer anderen Farbe - sein erster Schritt in die customizing-Szene. Seine Eingriffe in die Fahrzeugarchitektur wurden immer intensiver und er scheute vor nichts zurück. Dies perfektionierte er so weit, dass er schließlich eigene Autokreationen in seinem `Winfield's Custom Shop` schuf. Sein `Strip Star` - ein umgebauter 1946er Ford mit selbstgefertigter Karosserie - sorgte in den frühen 1960er Jahren für hohe Aufmerksamkeit in der Szene. Vermutlich weckte dieser Wagen das Interesse von Joe Kizis, einem Showpromotor von der Ostküste Amerikas. Der Veranstalter wollte ein ganz besonderes, auffälliges Auto, für dessen Aufbau er 20.000 US$ zur Verfügung stellte.

Gene Winfield erfüllte den Auftrag, indem er das Fahrwerk einer Citroen DS mit dessen ausgeprägter Federung verwendete und darin den 6-Zylinder Turbo-Antrieb einer Corvette Corvair montierte.

Unter der Bezeichnung `Autorama Special` stand das optisch sehr abstrakte, goldglänzend lackierte Showcar auf der `15th annual Hartford Autorama` im Jahre 1965 als Blickfang.

Nach diesem Auftritt bot Gene Winfield sein Auto den ´20th Century Fox` Filmstudios an und diese setzten ihn in einigen Film in Szene. Unter anderem war der als `Reactor` bekannt gewordene Wagen in der „Star Trek“-Folge „Bread and circuses“, in der „Batman“-Episode „The funny feline felonies“ und in dem 1968er „Mission Impossible“-TV Film „The freeze“ zu sehen.

Am 20. August 2017 war der Moviestar zusammen mit neun anderen Filmfahrzeugen in der eigens geschaffenen Wertung der „American dream cars of the 1960s“ beim beliebten `Pebble Beach Concours d´Elegance` zu sehen.

Gene „Windy“ Winfield was born in Springfield in 1927 and grew up in Modesto, California. Already at the age of 10 he made airplanes in his spare time, which he derived from photos. At the age of 15, he bought his first car. He immediately re-painted it in a different color – his first step into the customizing scene. His interventions into the vehicle architecture became more and more intense and he did not shy away from anything. The peak of his craft were his own created cars in his ’Winfield’s Custom Shop’. His ‘Strip Star’ – a converted 1946 Ford with a customized car body – attracted a lot of attention in the scene in the early 1960s. Most probably, this car aroused the interest of Joe Kizis, a show promoter form the East Coast of Amercia. The organizer wanted a very special, eye-catching car and budgeted 20,000 US$ for the construction.

Gene Winfield fulfilled the job by using the chassis of a Citroen DS with its distinctive suspension and equipped it with a six-cylinder turbo drive from a Corvette Corvair.

Under the name ‘Autorama Special’, the visually very abstract, shiny gold varnished show car was the eye-catcher at the ‘15th annual Hartford Autorama’ in 1965.

After this performance, Gene Winfield offered his car to ‘20th Century Fox’ and they staged it in some films. Among other things the car known as ‘Reactor’ was seen in the “Star Trek” episode “Bread and circuses”, in the “Batman” episode “The funny feline felonies” and in the 1968 “Mission Impossible” TV movie “The freeze”.

On August 20, 2017, the car was exhibited together with nine other film vehicles in the specially created rating of “American dream cars of the 1960s” at the popular ‘Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance’.

Gene "Windy" Winfield est né à Springfield en 1927 et grandit à Modesto, en Californie. A l'âge de 10 ans à peine, il construisait déjà des avions pendant son temps libre qu'il copiait à partir de photos. A 15 ans, il achète sa première voiture qu’il repeint immédiatement dans une couleur différente. Ce seront ses premiers pas sur la scène de la personnalisation de véhicules. Ses interventions sur l'architecture des voitures se font de plus en plus intenses et il ne recule devant rien. Le sommet de son art fut ses propres voitures créées dans son "Winfield's Custom Shop". Son ‘Strip Star’ – une Ford de 1946 transformée avec une carrosserie personnalisée – attire beaucoup d’attention au début des années 1960. Il est probable que cette voiture suscite alors l'intérêt de Joe Kizis, un organisateur de spectacles de la côte Est. Kizis commande à Gene Winfield une voiture très spéciale et accrocheuse et octroit un budget de 20 000 US$ pour sa fabrication.

Gene Winfield, emballé par le projet, utilise le châssis d'une Citroën DS avec sa suspension très particulière et l'équipe du moteur turbo à six cylindres d'une Corvette Corvair.

Sous le nom de « Autorama Special », cette voiture d'exposition, vernie d'or brillant et visuellement très abstraite, attire l'attention lors de la « 15e édition de l'Autorama de Hartford » en 1965.

Après cette performance, Gene Winfield offre sa voiture à la « 20th Century Fox » qui apparaitra dans quelques films. Entre autres, on peut la voir dans un épisode de Star Trek, « Bread and circuses » sous le nom de "Reactor". On la découvre aussi dans l'épisode "Batman" "The funny feline felonies" et dans le téléfilm "Mission Impossible" de 1968 "The freeze".

Le 20 août 2017, elle est exposée au très populaire "Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance" avec neuf autres véhicules cinématographiques dans le classement spécialement créé des "Voitures de rêve américaines des années 1960".
