Dem Student Charles Thomas, der im Jahre 1935 am `GM Institute of Technology` sein Studium abschloss, schwirrte in seinem Kopf ein Fahrzeug vor, das es bis dahin nicht gab und von dem er überzeugt war, es würde neue Maßstäbe in der Branche setzen. Charles Thomas fand nach seinem Studium eine Anstellung bei Pontiac und doch war der Wunsch größer, sein eigenes Auto zu realisieren, als bei der US-Autofirma tätig zu sein. In der Mitte des Jahres 1936 kündigte er seinen Job. Er tat sich mit seinem Studienkollegen Norm Richardson zusammen und beide begannen in einer Garage in Batavia ihr Rocket Car aufzubauen.

Für den Aufbau des einzigartigen Modells bedienten sie sich am Automarkt. Beispielsweise wählten sie als Antrieb einen V8-Motor eines aktuellen Ford-Modells, an den sie ein Drei-Gang Getriebe montierten. Die Technik war aber nicht die eigentliche Intension von Charles Thomas für den Bau seines Personenwagens, sondern das äußere Design. Durch eine mittig spitz zulaufende Fronthaube, weitaus tiefer als üblich in die Karosse eingelassene Frontscheinwerfer, vollkommen mit Blech abgedeckte Räder und extremen Rundungen am gesamten Wagen ergab sich eine Karosserie, die für damalige Zeit sehr ungewöhnlich war. Sicherlich waren Charles Thomas und Norm Richardson am Ende ihrer knapp vierjährigen Bauzeit Stolz auf ihr Werk und hofften, ihr einzigartiges Design würde auch die Großen der Branche in Euphorie versetzen. Mit ihrem Wagen wurden sie in der US-Hauptstadt des Automobilbaus, in Detroit, vorstellig und präsentierten es bei den drei größten Herstellern - General Motors, Chrysler und Ford.

Allerdings fiel die Reaktion bei allen drei Firmen nicht so aus, wie es sich Charles Thomas und Norm Richardson wünschten. Die Unternehmensvertreter zeigten sich nicht gleichermaßen begeistert wie sie und der große Traum, ihr einzigartiges Autodesign würde in eine Serienproduktion übernommen werden, erfüllte sich nicht!

Student Charles Thomas, who graduated from the GM Institute of Technology in 1935, had a vehicle in his mind that did not exist before and which he was convinced would set new standards in the industry. Charles Thomas found a job at Pontiac after his studies, and yet the desire was greater to build his own car than to work for the US car company. In the middle of 1936 he quit his job. He teamed up with fellow student Norm Richardson and they both started building their Rocket Car in a garage in Batavia.

To realize their unique model they draw on existing parts of the car market. For example, the went for a V8 engine from a current Ford model, to which they mounted a three-speed transmission. The inner workings of his passenger car were not a priority of Charles Thomas. He focused on the design of the car. A central pointed front hood, much deeper than usual embedded front lights, completely with sheet metal covered wheels, and extreme curves on the entire car resulted in a body that was very unusual at the time. Charles Thomas and Norm Richardson were quite proud of their work - in the end it took them almost four years to finish their unique car. Hoping that their unique design would also cause the same euphoria at the big names of the industry, they made their way to the U.S. capital of the automotive industry, in Detroit, and presented it to the three largest manufactures – General Motors, Chrysler and Ford.

However, the reaction of all three companies was not as Charles Thomas and Norm Richardson desired. The company representatives were not as enthusiastic as they were, and the big dream of a series production of their unique car design was not fulfilled!

L'étudiant Charles Thomas, diplômé du GM Institute of Technology en 1935, avait en tête un véhicule qui n'existait pas encore et dont il était convaincu qu'il établirait de nouvelles normes dans l'industrie automobile. Charles Thomas trouve un emploi chez Pontiac après ses études, mais son désir de construire sa propre voiture plutôt que de travailler pour le constructeur automobile américain était plus fort. Au milieu de 1936, il quitte donc son emploi et fait équipe avec son camarade Norm Richardson pour construire leur Rocket Car dans un garage à Batavia.

Pour réaliser leur modèle unique, ils s'appuient sur des parties existantes sur le marché automobile. Par exemple, ils optent pour un moteur V8 d'un modèle Ford contemporain, sur lequel ils montent une transmission à trois vitesses. Le fonctionnement interne de cette voiture de tourisme n'était pas une priorité pour Charles Thomas. Ce qui l’intéressait c’était son design. Un capot avant central finissant en pointe, des feux avant intégrés, les roues entièrement recouvertes par la carrosserie, et des courbes extrêmes sur toute la voiture donnent un rendu très inhabituel pour l'époque. Charles Thomas et Norm Richardson étaient très fiers de leur travail – en effet, il leur aura fallu près de quatre ans pour terminer cette unique voiture. Espérant que leur design original provoquerait la même euphorie chez les grands noms de l'industrie, ils se rendent à Détroit, la capitale américaine de l'industrie automobile, et la présente aux trois plus grands fabricants - General Motors, Chrysler et Ford.

Malheureusement, leur réaction ne fut pas celle que souhaitaient Charles Thomas et Norm Richardson. Leur grand rêve d'une production en série ne fut jamais réalisé !
