Wer heutzutage den Namen `Adams Probe Motor Co´ im Zusammenhang eines Autoherstellers nennt, dem werden größtenteils nur fragende Gesichter anstarren. Selbst diejenigen, die mit der britischen Fahrzeugindustrie etwas tiefer vertraut sind, wird nicht unbedingt auf Anhieb etwas dazu einfallen. Wer hingegen in der Filmgeschichte großer Klassiker versiert ist, der denkt sofort an den Kinofilm `Clockwork Orange` von Stanley Kubrick. Auf Anhieb wird der Name `Durango 95` fallen - unter dieser Bezeichnung wurde der flache, kantige und vor allem in oranger Farbe lackierte Sportwagen aus der Fertigung von Adams Probe Motor weltbekannt.

1969, als der flache Sportflitzer seine Fertigungsstätte in Bradford-on-Avon, gelegen in der Grafschaft Wiltshire, verließ, gehörte das Design zweifellos zum Spektakulärsten, was sich an einem britischen Auto wiederfand. Lediglich 86 cm maß die höchste Stelle des flachen Flitzers, dessen Einstieg durch einen genialen Kniff erleichtert wurde - beim Drehen des Schlüssels im Türschloss fuhren automatisch die beide Sitze zurück und das Dach öffnete sich. Eine extreme Keilform an der Front, ausklappbare Scheinwerfer und das Fehlen jeglicher Art von klassischen Stoßstangen vermittelte eine einzigartige Optik, die sich sehr zukunftsorientiert gab.

Der Antrieb war unmittelbar hinter den Sitzen als Mittelmotor platziert und basierte auf dem Vierzylinder-Triebwerk des Austin 1800. In den Händen der Tuner von `Janspeed Engineering` wurde der Motor auf 1.900 cm³ aufgebohrt und auf eine Leistung von fast 100 PS gesteigert. Der Aufbau bestand komplett aus Glasfaser verstärktem Kunststoff. Von Anfang an war das Kaufinteresse einem sehr illustren Kreis vorbehalten, denn mit einem Preisschild von 3.650, - britischen Pfund gehörte der Probe 16 ohne Zweifel in die gehobene Preisklasse. Insgesamt fertigten Adams Probe Motor Co in ihrem Werk nur drei Autos (wenige Angaben nennen auch die Zahl vier) im gesamten Jahr 1969. Doch dies Zahl genügte, um den Probe 16 unsterblich werden zu lassen.

Anyone who calls the name ‘Adams Probe Motor Co’ in the context of a car manufacturer today will mostly only stare at questioning faces. Even those who are little more familiar with the British car industry won’t necessarily come up with anything right away. On the other hand, if someone is well-versed in the history of great classics, they will immediately think of the movie ‘Clockwork Orange’ by Stanley Kubrick. The name ‘Durango 95’ – the name of the flat, angular and orange painted sports car from the production of Adams Probe Motor – will be immediately associated with the movie.

In 1969, when the flat sports car, left its production facility in Bradford-on-Avon, located in the county of Wiltshire, the design was undoubtedly one of the most spectacular found in a British car. Only 86 cm measured the highest point of the flat speedster and the entry, which was eased by an ingenious trick – when turning the key in the door lock, the two seats automatically drove back and the roof opened. The extreme wedge design of the front end, fold-out headlights and the absence of any kind of classic bumpers conveyed a unique, striking and forward-looking appearance.

The engine, which based on the four-cylinder engine of the Austin 1800, was directly placed behind the seats as so called mid-engine concept. In the hands of the engineers of ‘Janspeed Engineering’ the engine was drilled to 1,900cc and increased to an output of almost 100 hp. The car body was completely made of glass fiber reinforced plastic. From the beginning, the buying interest was reserved for a very illustrious circle. Due to its price tag of 3,650 British pounds, the Probe 16 undoubtedly belonged in the upper price range. In total, Adams Probe Motor Co produced only three cars at their plant (a few sources also mention the number four) in the entire year of 1969. But even this small number was enough to make the Probe 16 immortal.

Aujourd’hui, quiconque parlerait de "Adams Probe Motor Co" au cours une discussions sur les constructeurs automobiles ne rencontrerait que des regards interrogateurs. Même ceux qui connaissent un peu l’Histoire automobile britannique se demanderont de qui l’on parle. En revanche, quelqu’un qui connaîtrait bien les grands classiques du cinéma, penserait immédiatement au film "Orange mécanique" de Stanley Kubrick et à la fameuse "Durango 95" apparaissant dans le film qui fut produite par Adams Probe Motor.

En 1969, lorsque cette voiture de sport quitta son usine de production de Bradford-on-Avon (comté de Wiltshire), son design était sans aucun doute l'un des plus spectaculaires à cette époque en Grande Bretagne. Le point le plus élevé de la voiture se situait à seulement 86 cm du sol. Entrer dans la voiture aurait pu être compliqué si ce n’était pas facilité par une astuce ingénieuse :  en tournant la clé dans la serrure de la porte, les deux sièges reculaient automatiquement et le toit s'ouvrait. Avouez que cela évitait certainement des lumbagos aux occupants !

Le moteur, basé sur le « quatre cylindres » de l'Austin 1800, était directement placé derrière les sièges sous le concept d’un moteur central. Entre les mains des ingénieurs de "Janspeed Engineering", le moteur passe à 1 900 cm3 lui donnant une puissance de près de 100 cv. La carrosserie de la voiture était entièrement en plastique renforcé de fibre de verre. La conception très angulaire de l'avant, les phares rabattables et l'absence de tout type de pare-chocs lui donnaient une apparence unique, marquante et résolument futuriste. En raison de son prix élevé de 3 650 livres sterling de l’époque, le Probe 16 était certainement promis à un petit cercle d’acheteurs célèbres ou financièrement sans problème. Finalement au cours de toute l'année 1969, Adams Probe Motor Co ne produisit que trois voitures dans son usine (quelques sources en mentionnent une quatrième). Mais ce tout petit nombre fut suffisant pour rendre la Probe 16 immortelle.
