Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre hatte Helmut Bischofberger die Idee, einen Personenwagen mit einem Campingaufbau zu versehen und somit ein schnelles und dennoch komfortables Campingmobil zu schaffen.

Die Suche nach einem PS-starken Personenwagen führte ihn in das Audi-Sortiment, bei dem er im Audi 100 die ideale Basis für seinen Campingtraum sah. Unter dem Namen „Family“ und dem Zusatz „ein neues Reisemobilkonzept“ vermarktete er seine Idee und brachte in seinem Werbeslogan alles auf einen gemeinsamen Punkt: „Geräumigkeit und Nutzfläche eines Campingbusses verbunden mit den Vorteilen eines Pkw“. Für den Umbau beließ er den serienmäßig eingebauten Audi-Motor unverändert, genauso wie auch die gesamte Bodengruppe. Die Blechkarosse litt jedoch ab der B-Säule dahingehend, dass der hintere Teil komplett entfernt wurde. Der beherzte Eingriff in die Fahrzeugarchitektur wurde zunächst mit einer Stahlrohrkonstruktion im hinteren Bereich wieder stabilisiert, bevor der Wohnmobilaufbau darauf montiert wurde. Der Aufbau bestand aus GFK und wurde eigens nach den Vorstellungen der Bischofberger Motorcaravan GmbH & Co gefertigt. Um das Camper-Feeling für vier Personen trotz unverändertem Radstand so großflächig wie möglich zu gestalten, wuchs der GFK-Aufbau sowohl in der Länge als auch in der Breite auf die maximal zulässigen Maße. Für die Lösung des Problems mit der Höhe im Inneren des Wohnabteils sah Helmut Bischofberger zwei Arten vor – ein Aufklappdach und die starre Variante eines Hochdachs.

1990 wurde die Fertigung bei der Firma Bischofberger Motorcaravan GmbH & Co aufgegeben. Was bis heute überlebt hat, ist der Ruf, dass Helmut Bischofberger das seinerzeit schnellste Camper-Mobil aus Deutschland auf die Räder gestellt hatte.

In the beginning of the 1980s Helmut Bischofberger had the idea to furnish a passenger car with a motor home structure to create a fast and comfortable campervan.

His search of a powerful car led him into the car range of Audi, in which he saw the Audi 100 as a perfect base for his dream of a campervan. He marketed his idea under the name “family” and the addition “a new motor home concept”. The advertising slogan:

“Spaciousness and usable area like a camper combined with the advantages of a passenger car”

hit the nail right on the head. The engine and the chassis of the Audi 100 remained in its original condition during the conversion. Whereas the tin body - ongoing from the b-pillar - was totally removed. This major intervention into the vehicle architecture was initially stabilized with a tubular steel frame before the motor home structure was mounted on the chassis. The structure was made of GRP and custom-built for the company Bischofberger Motorcaravan GmbH & Co. To make the space for four persons as generous and comfortable as possible, the measurements regarding width and height of the motor home structure were maximally exhausted. Concerning the height-difficulty Bischofberger offered two solutions – a folding roof and a ridged high roof.

Bischofberger Motorcaravan GmbH & Co quit the production in 1990. The reputation, that Helmut Bischofsberger responsibly built the fastest German motor home of its day lasts to the present.

Au début des années 1980 Helmut Bischofberger eut l'idée de transformer une voiture de tourisme en camping-car rapide et confortable.

Recherchant une voiture puissante, il choisit l'Audi 100 comme base pour son camping-car idéal. Un choix parfait allié à un marketing simplissime :

Un concept : Un nom « Family » suivi de « un nouveau concept de camping-car».

Un slogan publicitaire : "Spacieuse et utilisable comme un camping-car combiné avec les avantages d'une voiture de tourisme".

Tellement simple qu’il met dans le mille !

D’abord, il garde le moteur et le châssis de l'Audi 100 et transforme entièrement la carrosserie. Cette intervention majeure dans l'architecture du véhicule, a été d’abord stabilisée à l’aide d’un cadre tubulaire en acier avant que la structure de l'habitacle ne soit montée sur le châssis.

La structure en GRP (Glass Renforced Plastic ou Fibre de verre) est fabriquée sur mesure pour la société Bischofberger Motorcaravan GmbH & Co.

Pour rendre l'espace aussi généreux et confortable que possible pour quatre personnes, l’élargissement de la structure a été poussée au maximum. Pour la hauteur, Bischofberger a proposé deux solutions - un toit pliant et un toit élevé rigide.

Bischofberger Motorcaravan GmbH & Co a stoppé la production en 1990. Helmut Bischofsberger restera dans les mémoires comme l’homme qui a construit, de manière responsable, la « maison allemande à moteur la plus rapide » !
