Als sich in der ersten Hälfte der 1960er Jahre die Verkaufserfolge für den VW Transporter T1 immer mehr aneinanderreihten, plante die Geschäftsführung bei Ford, dem Bestseller etwas entgegenzusetzen. Das deutsche und das britische Ford-Werk sollten zusammen einen Typ entwickeln, der dem VW Paroli bieten konnte, aber vor allem natürlich die Kundschaft abwerben sollte.

Das Vorhaben gipfelte schließlich in einem vollkommen neuen Transporter, der 1965 das Licht der Öffentlichkeit erblickte. In der Folgezeit avancierte in Großbritannien der Ford Transit Mk1 zum Bestseller bei den Lieferwägen.

Der enorme Erfolg auf der britischen Insel führte dazu, dass sich auch die Zubehörindustrie dem Transit Mk1 annahm, allen voran der bekannteste englische Campingausrüster, die Fima `Dormobile`.

„The side elevating roof“ nannte die Fabrik in Keystone ihr aufklappbares Dach und sah den Einbau anfangs nur für den Bedford-Van vor. Mit dem Einbau des Klappdachs übernahm das Werk auch den Umbau des Fahrzeuginneren. Sitzmöglichkeiten für vier Personen, ein Bett für zwei Reisende und Stauräume kennzeichneten fortan die Bedford-Camper.

Im Laufe der nächsten Jahre folgte die systematische Erweiterung der Basistypen. So war es ab 1961 auch möglich, einen Dormobile-Camper auf Basis eines VW Busses zu bestellen. 1970 schließlich wurde auch der Ford Transit Mk1 in das Sortiment der in Folkstone ansässigen Firma aufgenommen.

Das seitlich aufklappbaren Dachteil mit dem Innenausbau in Vollausstattung wurde unter der Bezeichung `Freeway` angeboten. Diese Topausstattung beinhaltete den Innenausbau mit einem Spülbecken, Gaskocher, Vorhänge am rückwärtigen Fenster in der Heckklappe, einen Kleiderschrank, zwei im aufklappbaren Dachbereich montierte Betten, ein zu öffnendes Dachfenster und Schränke, in denen auch ein Kühlschrank eingebaut werden konnte.

In the first half of the 1960s, when the sales successes for the VW Transporter T1 became more and more, the management at Ford planned to counter the bestseller. The project finally culminated in a completely new van, which saw the light of day in 1965. Subsequently, the Ford Transit Mk1 became the bestseller among delivery vans in Great Britain.

The enormous success on the British Isles led to the Transit Mk1 also being embraced by the accessories industry, above all the best-known English camping outfitter, the company ‘Dormobile’.

“The side elevation roof” was how the factory in Keystone named its folding roof and initially only intended to be installed for the Bedford van. With the installation of the folding roof, the plant also took over the conversion of the vehicle interior. Seating for four people, a bed for two travelers and storage spaces characterized the Bedford campers from then on.

In the course of the next few years, the systematic expansion of the basic types followed. From 1961 it was also possible to order a Dormobile camper based on a VW bus. Finally, in 1970, the Ford Transit Mk1 was added to the range of the Folkstone-based company.

The side-hinged roof section with the fully equipped interior was offered under the designation ‘Freeway’. This top equipment included the interior fittings with a sink, gas cooker, curtains on the rear window in the tailgate, a wardrobe, two beds mounted to the hinted roof area, an opening skylight and cupboards in which a refrigerator could also be installed.

Ce projet a débouché sur un tout nouveau fourgon sorti en 1965. Rapidement, ce Ford Transit Mk1 est devenu le best-seller parmi les fourgons de livraison en Grande-Bretagne.

Cet énorme succès remporté dans les îles britanniques a conduit le Transit Mk1 à être adopté par l'industrie des accessoires, en particulier par Dormobile, l'entreprise de camping anglaise la plus connue.

« Le toit à élévation latérale» … c'est ainsi qu’à l'usine de Keystone on nommait son toit pliant, initialement destiné à être installé uniquement sur la camionnette Bedford. Avec l'installation de ce toit rabattable, l'usine a également transformé l'intérieur du véhicule. Des sièges pour quatre personnes, un lit pour deux voyageurs et des espaces de rangement caractérisent désormais les camping-cars Bedford.
